Just visited Pet-Pourri in Everett Washington, and to my surprise they had a bunch of Polys in stock!

:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

They have 3 Ornate juveniles, about 4" long, and all appeared to be males...$39.99 each (wish I had the room! :naughty:)

A BIG Concigus (sp?) about 12"

And the price :WHOA:

I'm not an employee but I asked before I grabbed pics and they were all over the free advertising! haha.

You should tell them that the Congicus they're selling is actually a Lapradei and they definitely don't go for that much.

Otherwise, it's a nice looking stock.

First of all nice stock..
Second of all.. You have the sexes on the ornates wrong, you cant sex them until they get bigger.

and third..That is a Polypterus Bichir Lapradei, and the price is waaay to high.

Can't you tell the sexes by the anal fin like Sengal Bichirs? The Ornates all had sharper points and not really round... But I am a novice... Please educate me!

The Lap I have no clue, the only Poly's you see in this area are Seng's and Albino's, I have only seen one other Ornate, and it was 12-13", never looked to sex it though...

BTW thanks to whomever moved my post-wasn't 100% sure I had put it in the right place...

for all bichirs and ropefish, you can only tell the sex after the fish reaches a certain age. Assuming the fish has normal growth and isn't stunted or something, a 4" ornate is too young to sex. Likewise, a 4" senegal will also be too young to sex.

on the other hand, the 12"-13" ornate you've seen before would most likely be old enough to be sexed.

I spoke to the younger helper, not the main fish guy (cool kid with lots of passion for the hobby), he said that their supplier stated the geniology, not the store. He seemed receptive to the correction, so I spelled out the scientific name for him after I google the 2 species-I said he should probably do the same...:naughty:

Didn't mention price to him, because I have no clue what either are worth, but knew enough to know that I couldn't afford either one of them!

Thanks for the correct knowledge!

i guess my lfs isnt the only mislables polys... my lfs labels endlis as dels... so yah.

[YT][/YT]The fact that they are trying to pass a Lapradei off as a Congicus, and then sell that Lapradei for $120 is laughable! That should be no more than $35-$40 at any LFS. If they are going to sell a fish for $120 they should at least have an idea what kind of fish it is.

^^^^ Exactly what i was thinking, that price is BaNaNaS :nilly:

I know those guys. They take really good care of their fish. I'm sure they will make any corrections necessary. Pet-pourri is not into ripping people off, but if they paid a certain price for a fish, they need to at least break even on it, right? They, like any pet shop, have to rely on their vendors.

Give it a few days. Jesse will do the research and figure it out for sure.

You missed out on the gold dust bichirs in the lower left tank. They are about as pretty as the ornates and not as expensive.
