I bought a brand new HOT magnum 250 for my 20L tank and I am experiancing some loud "splashing" sounds. I have always heard this filter is silent and this thing is LOUD. The water level in the tank seems to only be at 1/4 of filtration chamber, I am not sure if this is normal.

When setting up magnum filters its best to fill the entire canister with water before hooking it up to the hoses and turning the power on. Doing it this way allows the pump to immediately start pulling water out of your tank with minimal air trapped in the filter. The air thats trapped in the filter now is the noise your hearing. Even when filling the canister all the way up you will still have a little air trapped but it will come out after a couple of hours in most cases. GoodLuck....

I quit using my magnum because it was always loud. No matter what I did, there was always an air pocket and splashing noise. Some people on here like the magnums, but I think the canister filters with the pump on top(like Eheims) are much quieter.

Thanks, I did this and it worked great!

Also can I use a Mag 350 as a standalone filter for my 20L? Do I need a bio filter?
