Hey everyone, I just purchased a little 1.5 inch jag and had my first attempt at feeding him today. I tried the Hikari Gold floating pellets, he nipped at one but didnt take it. I was able to get him to take blood worms, but all the fish in there gobble up the blood worms so its hard for him to get a bunch, any other suggestions besides a growth tank?

how much bigger are they than the new jag? also what size are the pellets? they may be too big for him, try soaking them first to soften them up that way he can get them with his first try and not lose them to the other tankmates. and i wouldnt worry too much yet, its still his first day in the tank, once he settles in he will become a more aggressive feeder. if, after he has been in there for awhile he is still not able to get enough food then you should divide him into his own portion of the tank or set him up in a grow out tank. these guys grow fast so you wont have to worry about it for long, the dominant one of the 2 jag babies i rescued is growing more than an inch a month and has almost tripled in size in the past 2months so he will be bigger than his tankmates in no time

hes with a few 4 inch gouramis, a 5 in senegal, 2 pictus cats and a 4 in tinfoil barb. softening up the pellets sounds good. I will try that, and I will continue to do the bloodworms, my senegal goes to town on those . Thanks!

np, but you really want the pellets to be the staple diet 9for the senegal as well) bloodworms dont have much nutrition and so should only be used as a treat, at most a couple times a week. for my senegals i get those sinking shrimp pellets and all of the other fish absolutely love them as well, i would also suggest another pictus as they tend to fight when there are only two of them (though it is possible i would just keep an eye on them, i had 2 together for a year with no problems and then i moved and moved them to another tank and they starting fighting like crazy) GOOD LUCK with him, and just an FYI in case you dont know, if it turns out to be a male jag then it will eventually need a larger tank than a 75g, but if its a female then it should be fine

oh awesome, I didn't know that the bloodworms werent very nutritional, Ill get some of the sinking shrimp pellets today, and yea I know about the size of the jags. I don't know the sex yet. I need to look into sexing of these species, but I plan on moving it into a 150 when the time comes. So far my pictus cats actually stay at the opposite ends of the tank usually, going in and out of dug out lairs under rocks. I wouldnt mind another tho, I like pictus'. Its nice to have another person up all night to help out. Thanks again

i got some more cichlid mini pellets, but these ones were even smaller. He got one during feeding and after a couple grab and releases, he took it down.. but I only saw one go down. I'll keep up on it. I also got some shrimp food sticks, and the pictus cats went straight for em lol my jag never had a chance

i have a feeling that since its been quite a few months that i have been tong feeding thawed blood worms to my senegal, its gonna be tough to get him onto pellet food. He does take the freeze dried blood worms too tho, but not any pellets today

if you stop feeding the other stuff then he will definitely go for the pellets eventually, senegals are really aggressive eaters and IME have no problem getting food even with rambunctious cichlids tankmates, those blood worms dont really have much nutrition so its best to get him on pellets for his staple diet. but yeah my pictus love those pellets and go right for them as do my sens. i just put some on one side of the tank and then some on the other so they are spread out and more fish have a chance to get them

soo my lil jag is still not eating the sinking pellets .. he'll initially grab one, then spit it out, and rummage around the sand for stuff but doesnt eat the shrimp pellets on the substrate either .. annnd my senegal has been nipping at some of the pellets on the ground, but hasnt been taking the whole pellet or even enough where i feel confident hes eating enough
