ashe! my name is tamara and i am a monster fish keeper! actually, i tend toward the small and exotic, but appreciate all types of fish keeping obsession. i am having two problems that maybe someone can help with. one, i am having a really nasty case of ick in my rainbowfish / gourami tank that i just cannt get rid of...the is week three of copper treatment AND then potassium permaganate :popcorn:neither is working. any suggestions?
and second, i am having trouble keeping my wild caught minnows alive, which i am catching in preparation for my swamp biotope - i am using the same water they were caught in. any ideas why this may be?

thnks,
poisson

i am using the salt,too...as for the heat...it is up as high as it can go, but i am thinking it may not be high enough ( cheap heater ) its not cold enough here to really worry about it,so i did not put special thought into the heater.
i am just about loosing it...this rainbow/gourami tank is so pretty..i hate to loose anymore fishes!

no filtration on the swamp minnows, but a air stone...the shiners died within 24 hours,i never go a chance to do much with them, even though i managed to catch a few darters, too.

:welcome:

I keep some rainbows in with my clown loaches and they seem to love warm water. I usually have my tank around 85*. I don't if the gouramis will like that much heat, but it does help them fight ich. I only use aquarium salt and warm water when I have an ich breakout.

thanks for replying, guys! i will try raising the temperature even more & continue the treatment- even though, my red rainbow is looking better this morning. the gouramis are tough little fishes...they should do fine.
i am glad you bought up the clown loaches, because i was thinking they would look great in the rainbow/gourami tank,too!... and was going to get a few when the ick cleared up.how many more fishes ( clown loaches! ) do you think my sixty gallon can hold? i have twenty right now ( 2 red rainbows,7 crimson spotted rainbows;2 gold ,1 pearl & 3 sunset gourami, 4 paradise fish & 1 rainbow shark.they are all small right now, with the largest red rainbow close to four inches.
ashe!

Clown loaches and rainbows make a great pair, since they both love fast moving waters. You might want to get another tank for the gouramis and just do a rainbow and clown loach tank (if you want clown loaches) so you could throw some powerheads in there to help with extra current. I would think that a pack of 3-5 would be a nice start. But, they would eventually need a larger tank since they can grow as large as 12"....even though is does take forever. I have quite a few that are in the 6" - 9" range in my 180.

If you need more info on clown loaches, check out ewurms blogs. He's packed all the information you would ever need to know in there.

i guess you are right...i am probably on the verge of overstocking. i just had to get another tank for my ctenopomas and marble angels. the angels had/have a pack leader who constantly pecks/bullies everyone but the ctenopomas and pleco. the ctenopomas were stalking a few lovlies- never ate any, but would viciously bite any who come too close.
the african bush fish are hilarious-stealthly,sneaky,creeping,dashing and sinking quietly into the plants...camouflaged. sweet little sunset gourami comes too close to hiding spot...oops,nasty body bite!
they are by far the smartest fish i have.
anyhoo.the two whisper filters put plenty current in the tank, too much,in fact...
i am going to do as you suggest and re-home the gourami, buy three clowns.
how will the clowns do with oscars?

Oscars would be bad. There would be a good chance that the oscar would eat the loaches which could end up killing the oscar with their sub-ocular spine.
