Hello all Im new here and have recently upgraded to a 300 gallon. I currently have 3 oscars, a silver arowana, 2 small 4 line catfish, and a common pleco. I have read about the schooling attributes of oscars when u keep 5 or more so i would like to get 2 more and i would like to get a pair or green terrors bringing the stock of the 300 to:
1 arowana
5 oscars
2 green terrors
2 4 line cats
1 pleco

Is that over crowding? Thanks for any advice!

Austin

SOme say it would be overcrowding...BUt a 300 is large....I have kept 5 Oscas in a 300g before...WIth 2 silver arowanas, a pair of green Severums, 3 bikirs, and a few other oddblls fom s. america....My uncle's mata mata lived in that setup for a little over a year before being tansferred to another tank...Keeping up with weekely water changes, monthly filtation cleaning, and a steady-diverse diet maintained the tank's occupance fom babies to "adults" for almost seven years....

ok, so is that a yes it'd be over crowded, or it would be over crowded but do-able with religious maintinence? thanks!

oh, what could i cut off that list to make it close to ok?

yup it will be overcrowded but keep it well filtered and you will have a tank that will bring out the envy in others
and get one green terror or get a group
because green terrors do fight a lot and will kill the other one eventually but i am not sure this will happen with 5 oscars but when i had one oscar and 2 GTs the bigger GT kept assaulting the other till i removed him from there
though they do well in groups as in my pond i have 11 GTs along with loads of africans and i haven't seen much aggression

so 1 GT, 5 O's, 1 Arowana, and few small cleanup cats (pleco, 4 line) sound good? filtration is a sealife wet dry w/ a mag 1200 return and 2 AC 110's just to help move water. sufficient? thanks!

that should do
but do not rely on the pleco to do the cleaning of the bottom as plecos are
poop machines and they need to be fed veggies along with algae wafers, just don't leave the pleco to eat whatever is left out

I've been keeping Oscars for over 20 years and buy no means do I think I'm an authority on the subject this is just my opinion from what I've experienced. The fewer the Oscars in the tank the better. Other than a mated pair I believe Os like to be by themselves. O's are pretty lazy fish and like to find a place to lay around. I think your tank and filtration is fine just make sure they all have a place to be by themselves.
