sectioned off a corner of a 60 gallon with some wood sticking out of the water.

Says you live in Socal....as in Southern California, right? I don't know if you're aware, but keeping snapping turtles in California is illegal.

Even keeping them? It was given to me. We'll see if the animal police will kick my door down for a little turtle.

That's what I said.

California bans all kinds of animals, and for good reason. Look at what's happened to Florida. You and your friend might also be in violation of the Lacey Act.

I hope hope you're prepared for the fast growth! Common Snappers get large quick. They are fast company as well! Watch your fingers once it hits about 5-6 inches. Also get a good plan for housing when it outgrows that section of your tank. Start researching powerful pond filtration now! I have a pair that were the size of a quarter and one year later they were both 6-8 inches long! Now they are 4 years old and about 16 and 20 inches. I don't think alot of people take this into consideration when they get them. Hence the legal issues in certain areas where they could be released and thrive. All the while demolishing native species. I set them up in an above ground pond in my garage. They are cool little dinosaurs with shells, but dirty and mean! Good luck, and best wishes.

Lucky. :]
Man I wish snappers were legal here in cali.
