Sigh... I typed a long thread then my browser didn’t work right and didn’t post it, anyways

Well, I was just surfing around the net looking for some good fish resources when I rolled up on this little community. After playing around a few years back with 40 gal tank I have moved up to a 55 gal. Its Freshwater, I would love to go salt with all the vivid colors and beautiful fish but its just to high for my budget. At the moment I have just 2 Bala sharks in it but next week I will be adding a needle nose fish and a knife fish to the tank then once there is enough algae to support it a Pleco. I wish to also get a puffer fish (either by finding a store nearby or buying one off this site from a member): mbu, King Kong, Spotted Congo, Pig Nose, or Brazilian. I would prefer a Brazilian but any will do, I have read a little bit about each of them. Now for a couple questions if I may ask:

1. Is it easy to trade/buy fish and such on here? are there mostly good people or a decent amount of asshats?
2. Do you recommend a Quarantine tank?
3. Do you think my fish setup i listed above is going to work? if not, why?
4. Any other things u want to say

Last but not least i would like to show off my work of art (lol hardly)

Thank you so much for your time, and i hope to be chatting it up with most of you in the near future.

p.s. yeah i need a backdrop for the tank too

People tend to be friendly here, unless you get on their bad side, lol. As to how easy it is to sell/trade fish on here, it depends on what you have and also, like anywhere else, the demand for what you have and the price.

I don't think a puffer will fit well with the needlenose fish. AS for the knife fish, it depends on what you are looking at. If you're going for a clown or royal nice or aba aba or any of the other knife fish that get pretty big, peeps will urge you to not get them unless you plan on upgrading your tank to around 185+ gallons. For the aba aba, a fish that gets 5' long, even large tank/pond. But yeah, everybody is different on here. Some are laid back, like me, and others can be harsh and will always be on your case for something if it's not to their specifications.

Yes, quarantining your fish is recommended, though I never have done that and have never had a problem because of it, everyone on here will probably tell you to do so.

Welcome to MFK, and have fun, lol.

Also, if you really like the look of colorful saltwater reef setups, you might want to try getting into the African cichlid scene. They are freshwater, and in my opinion, can be every bit as vibrant/colorful as any saltwater fish. Also, a majority of them will be able to stay in your 55 gallon for life.

First, welcome!:)

I think that if you were using your 55 as a grow out for a 200 gallon, most of your stocking would work. If you want a puffer, you will need another tank for it. Puffers don't mix well with ANYTHING else, they tend to nip the heck out of everything, and eventually kill and or eat it.:grinno: Are you planning on upgrading?

ugh bloody blue gravel and fake coral make me want to kill myself. anyway :D i see no problems with the gar but with 2 bala's and the needlenose...i think thats nice stocking for a 55gallon :D maybe a medium sized pleco also.

puffer fish should be in a species only tank ( i've seen people mix but they have lots of spare tanks! )

see i dunno if to suggest the grow out since you've just upgraded to the 55 from 40...so i don't see you getting a 200G tank in the next 6month. i dunno. i know that half of peoples plans for upgrade don't happen...inc,myself.

also if you really arn't sure about it....go salt! i'll look after you in the salt section! haha

:naughty:Salt is good, real good. FOWLR tanks are fun, and not as expensive as reef tanks. I can help u with salt too if you need it.:D

Lots of good people on here, certainly far outweigh the bad.

A puffer will not work w/ the others (well, not definitely, but in most cases).

Having a pleco will be fine, but you will need one that stays smaller...no sailfins or commons. You will also have to watch that it doesn't suck the slime coat off of the knife.

The balas will outgrow the 55, but they are very slow growers, so you'll have a while. I would recommend gettin another so you have 3. Same with a black ghost knife (well except only 1), but if you get an African Brown Knife, it will be fine for life in there.

The needle fish should be fine, too, as they generally get to 12 inches. I'm sorry, but 55's aren't the greatest for monster fish because of the width (75's are generally much better), but don't get me wrong, there are plenty of fish that you can keep in a 55.

G/L with the hobby. Please, get rid of the blue gravel and fake coral...just IMO

:mwave::welcome::mwave:

Congrats on the knew tank, don't mind princess, she's just jealous of the blue gravel ;).

I'll reserve comment on your bio-load till I hear what your filter(s) consist of.

Do add stock one at a time so your filtration can catch up.

I think you'll be amazed at the knowledge on this forum.

If you have specific questions you can't find an answer to after searching the forums (search function is at the top of the page) post in that particular group to get the fastest answers.

1) Check out the buy/sell area everyone is different. If you have a question of a buyer PM him.

2) Quarantine tanks are an absolute must with a 3 week minimum stay.

Best of luck with your miniMONSTER tank :D.

Dr Joe
