Hello to all Monster fish Keepers,

I just want to say hello and introduce myself because I am new to this site. I decided to become a member because this site has tons of great information. In particular I am really into DIY projects and there seems a strong similar interest among members here. I am very impressed with members who have built their own "monster" aquariums. My hat is off to all of you. I someday hope to build my own monster aquarium and I have gained much knowledge from reading the posts in the DIY section.

I currently keep a dozen aquariums ranging from 15 gallons to 150 gallons. I also build and maintain outdoor ponds. I enjoy keeping all sorts of aquarium fishes. I currently have too many fish to list, but I have everything from tetras, to monster cichlids and everything in between including dwarf cichlids, a few african cichlids, angelfish, livebearers, L-numbered plecos, goldfish and one bullhead catfish. I am particularly proud to report that I have just had a spawn of widemouth catfish, Anaspidoglanis macrostoma, sorry no pictures yet. I only have 5 fry that are about .25", but are growing fast.

I have kept many monster cichlids in the past, but my only 2 current monster fish are a 14" Cichlasoma bocourti and a 15" Tilapia buttikoferi.

Since this is my first post I am attempting to post a couple of pictures. I am hopeful that these will load properly. If so, you should be looking at a plant filter that I constructed with 55 gallon tank that had a broken center brace. I felt it would be safer than using it as a 55 bowfront. The plant in the picture is pothos, but I have also had success with crypt's, basil and cilantro in this filter. The pothos just grows out of control in aquarium water and I had to keep cutting it back. The vines in the picture eventually grew to 30 feet.

I have been keeping aquariums for almost 20 years and like many of you, this hobby all started with a 10 gallon aquarium, which became insufficient when my first Oscar rapidly outgrew this setup.

This is a great site, with many ambitious and dedicated members.

welcome! i love the plant filter dont see to many of them. how well does it work? was there any other filtration to go with it? i see bioballs.

The filter is just like a standard wet/dry trickle filter on the right hand side. Water is gravity fed from an overflow box to the top of the filter tower on the right. The water flows through some poly quilt badding, which rests on top of an undergravel filter plate cut to fit. Then the water falls directly onto the bioballs. There is a piece of glass that is vertically siliconed in place to create the filter tower on the right hand side of the tank. There is a mag drive 1200 submerged on the left to return water to the aquarium.

The pvc frame holds up both the filter tower and the plant tray. I built the pvc frame so that a plant tray could fit snugly in the middle, this way the tray can be easily removed. The tray has holes punched in the bottom to allow the water in and the roots to grow out into the water. I use rockwool for the plant media. I designed this filter so that I could use it as a standard wet/dry trickle filter, just in case I needed to remove the plants or if there was any problem with the plants.

The tank has been operating like this for 3 years. The water stays exceptionally clean and clear and I have very little algae growth in this tank. I think the plants out compete the algae to a certain extent. To clean the filter I just replace the quilt badding. This tank can go much longer without a water change than my other tanks. Still the amount of plant mass is not enough to keep up with the amount of fish waste. For this system to be completely water change free, the plant filter would have to be much larger.

Welcome! :) I'm sure we should be learning quite a lot from you. :)
