Greetings MFK,

I have had a recent interest in setting up my own freshwater aquarium, 4x2x2ft tank. I've semi-decided on Pleco, Cory Cats, Angel Fish and Discus for the moment.

This will be my first aquarium and I have a friend who is fairly experienced that will be helping me along the way but there a some things I still can't wrap my head around which include using/building a sump. I'm not overly sure about sizes, what to put in it and how to make a non-PVC DIY overflow without drilling the tank. I've had a look through the DIY section and am still a bit stumped on making a sump tank.

Another thing I would like to bring up and ask for some help on is a recommendation on fish shops. I'm a local to the north side of Brisbane, Australia. Specifically located in Bracken Ridge. I've been looking around at some of the local aquariums but I would love to hear from someone with experience with these shops to find out the best place to shop.

I would also be interested in finding out if there is any place close to me that I would be able to catch my own live fish.

Most people will say that discus should be in a species only tank because of there special needs.

My suggestion is to seek out more experienced members in the particular subforums of species you're interested in. Not bashing the general section, but out of all the sections on MFK I consistently see the worst advice here. ;)
