Hey everyone. I just got a 5" yellow male Midas from Jeff Rapps on Friday 3/24. The fish is gorgeous...EXACTLY what I wanted. I received him the next day and he was packed up very professionally. He's still a little skiddish and won't swim up to the top of the tank yet, but his appetite was good since day one.

The only problem I'm having is getting him to swim around comfortably with the light on. When the light is off, he'll venture out (still staying on the bottom half of the tank) but once the light goes on, he hides behind the driftwood. He came out twice last night, but only when I sat down and put my face close to the glass...almost like he felt safer if I was watching him go out in the light.

Right now I threw some Tiger Bards and a Geo in there with him (75G tank). Any suggestions on how else to ease his transition to being comfortable in the tank, especially with the light on?

And don't worry, I'll post pics soon.

Just give him some time. He's just got to get used to the new surroundings. Looking forward to the picks.

yup, like the others have said give him a couple of weeks. the older a fish gets the longer it will take to adjust to change. it's just like in people, little kids usually adjust to change much better than adults do and the fish you have is a what I would consider to be at sub-adult stage so it will take him some time. soon enough he should be biting at you through the glass and trying to kill the other fish in there so I"d keep a close eye on him and be prepared to remove the other fish very quickly. :)

I've never received anything but great advice from everyone on here.
He's been getting much more bold with each day. After about a week he got used to the light, and is now highly aggressive, will eat off the surface and tries to attack me when I get near the tank. He's recognized me as his food source. The personality on this fish and his overall quality is amazing.

And as promised, here are a couple of pics. Please take a look...I've noticed that he's started to develop some black blotches on his fins and head. Is this normal? Can anyone predict what color he will be in adulthood?

Thanks for all the replies.

gorgeous lookin fish...how much did he cost...and he looks gorgeous..nice pickup...you should get him a mate

nice midas.

the dark marks would come and go and change for the first month or two after getting my midas. just stressed maybe? im sure thats an opinion/reason ive read somewhere. the black never came back once he started to grow.

Very nice midas! I agree with the others that if you give him time he will eventually start to come out. To speed up the process you could put some small fish in such as guppys etc so that he feel's safe.
