I want to set up a strictly invert community tank for a 10 gallon aquarium.

I'm planning on putting ramshorn and mystery snails, ghost shrimp and Daphnia magna in it. They would get flake/pellet food every day or two, and frozen/boiled zucchini or greens every week or so. At least two (hopefully more) compact fluorescent bulbs to try to stimulate some algae. Java moss and water sprite will be planted.

A handfull of questions immediately come to mind.

1) are the shrimp and snails safe with each other

2) would the underwater ramshorn eggs (and babies) be safe in this tank

3) what subtrate is best to use (sand? medium gravel? coarse gravel? no substrate?)

4) what filtration is best (undergravel filter? sponge? corner box?)

5) do the plants stand a chance of surviving? if not , would any other plants be a better choice (duckweed? anubias? java fern? bolbitis?)

6) ... finally , any recommendations, substitutions or additions to the above chosen inverts for a beginners invert tank?

I've housed snails in fish filled tanks, and Daphnia in various jugs, but never an aquarium set up specifically devoted to them.

Thanks for your input.

hello and welcome to mfk.
1. yes most varieties will be cool if you are talking about prawns that's another story.
2. yes,"see number 1"
3. sand and java moss it gives the baby shrimp a place to hide out.
4. h.o.b. less chance of sucking up babies
5. for ramshorn and cherry shrimp for example anything that you want to plant will be fine . they will eat algae off the leaves but, not the leaves themselves.
6. cherry shrimp rams horn snails, are both easy and you can build from there.

Your reply was much appreciated. Two further questions...

(from above)
3) In the above set-up, from whom do the babies need to "hide out"? (do the adults attack the young?) ... would a coarse aquarium gravel be better since it provides more nooks-and-crannies for the babies to hide in than sand?

4) What does h. o. b. stand for?

(new question)
7) How does one know the correct amount of food to give an invert before it dies(specifically a shrimp)?

Once again, thanks for the reply.

3) you should be fine
4) Hang on back, I would use a Penguin 100
7) I would just drop an algae wafer in and let them pick that clean.
