Just picked up this beast just before christmas. He's easily over 12" and is very aggressive and a bit of a glass banger. I'm not 100% on species, I was thinking synspilum or bifisciatum. What do you guys think?

bifasciatum fo sho.
he has nice eyes!

That's not a Bifasciatum. Bifas have a noticeable black blotch in the operculum. A horizontal caudal band points to the blotch. There is also a second horizontal band (thus the BI-fas) between the caudal band and the dorsal fin base. It's not synspilus either. My guess would be fenestratus....or at least part fenestratus. The marking around the eye points me in that direction.

Not sure but it kinda looks like a black belt cichlid

Never kept these before, a guess, either a fenestratus or synspilum. Anyways thats an awesome specimen, keep it good!

I would say you are correct on part Fenestratus but not full. I see the characteristics you are talking about whcih also makes me think PART fene but I can't pin point the other species.
