Got these two yesterday. The male is doing great and already close to 100% after being shipped. The female is still stressed from shipping and has some redness underneath her disc. Both are eating (the male more so than the female) and appear healthy.

Im still worried about the female being stressed out and Ive only had the tank lights on briefly since acclimation.

first pic: female
second pic: male
third pic: both
fourth pic: female up against glass showing redness. This was taken last night and there has been a very minor improvement in the redness as of this morning.

Any suggestions are always welcome.

Thanks

I also think it would be a good idea to change the substrate to sand. They look pretty thin. Have they started eating for you yet? Nice motoros though.

Yea the male is doing great and really has fattened up. The female is in fact eating but is thin still.

I am going to try some organic European night crawlers later this evening to try and get her to have a big feeding session.

I was planning on placing the new rays in my large bare bottom plywood tank but they came in a little smaller and thinner than I anticipated and I did not want to risk them with my larger ray until they had more size on them. Thinking I will change or remove the gravel tonight as long as it wont stress them out too much.

Motoros tend to be very good eaters so they should fatten up soon. Are they captive bred? If they are wild caught and don't seem to be gaining weight then you may want to treat them for parasites to be safe.

The gravel may or may not irritate them depending on what type it is but gravel can trap waste reducing your water quality. Also rays love to bury themselves and that would be difficult for pups with gravel.

Good luck

Update 2.14.2012

The male is a pig devouring pretty much anything that touches the bottom. The female has finally adjusted over the weekend and is eating frozen krill. She does not seem to stuff herself all in one sitting like the male but she is now constantly looking for food.

Still need to put more weight on her but she is looking so much better. All of the redness under her disc is gone and overall attitude is much improved.
