Just pick these guys up tonight, I got a total of six, three "black" and three "gold". If you all could help me on a proper ID that would be great. Also for some reason the "gold" ones where way more active, any thoughts as to why?

Lupin;2659653; said:There is no black mystery snail. "Blacks" often are simply dark striped purple (magenta) or dark striped green (wild). You have wild colors there. As to why the golds are more active, they may have gotten acclimated quicker than the wilds.
Vince, all snails he has are the same species therefore all requirements for all colors are simply the same. They require calcium enriched foods such as reptile granules, plaster of Paris pucks, snail jello and veggies such as collards to promote healthy shell growth.
WMDunkin, what are your pH and KH? You'll want the pH to remain at 8.0 and water hard to serve as a buffer as anything lower especially acidic water can erode the shells pretty badly. Check out post 4 of msjinkzd's sticky thread in Aquariacentral.com for food recipes. Plaster of Paris pucks are less hassle than snail jello. Aside from buffering your water, snails ingest the plaster of Paris for healthy shell growth and it also clarifies the water better than most water conditioners can.
API should have it. Search your stores for one. eBay might be your last resort.WMDunkin;2662609; said:the pH is right near 8.0-8.3 right now. Is there a test kit for the KH? and I am letting them eat some seaweed from TopFin. and they have been snacking on that for the past few days.
