Hey MFK, how is everyone?

So I'm really interested in ponds again and since my parents won't let me dig a pond or build a pond, I'm stuck with filling pots with water and calling them ponds. If anyone saw my last thread, it was about my little nano pond that I set up about a month ago, but what I didn't anticipate was how cold it was got last week. I checked the water at its coldest and it was about 55F! And the 5 mosquito fish survived!!! But considering its getting into the winter months I wanted to keep things a little bit more stable and use a larger plant pot so I found another one in the backyard, dumped its contents of rotting leaves, rinsed it, plugged up its holes with silicone, and no I'm gonna go put some gravel and pebbles on the bottom, and fill her up. I expect it to be about 20 something gallons, so more than twice what my current one is. I wanted something more colorful to breed in there along with the plants so I was thinking some nice swordtails, but do you think they could handle the low temps on the really cold days? I mean, I live in socal so it really rarely ever gets below 65, unless its raining, but if it does get cold, I could always just do a mini water change with some really warm water to counter the cold or drop a small heater in there. Also, the only filtration would be the plants, so stocking would be at a minimum, probably 5 adult fish at the most, or should I only keep a pair? I've never been good at breeding livebearers. in fact, i've had these mosquito fish for over a month and still not 1 fry have i found. Any ideas?

Pics of progress coming later today.

oh, or what about fancy guppies instead of swordtails if swordtails are too big? I want something I can breed and trade into my LFS for a little bit of store credit here and there along with the multitude of plants I plan to grow in there? And i've realized that algae has become a problem in my current pond so any suggestions as to good algae eaters? I've heard american flagfish, but will they pose a threat to the fry of whatever fish I want to breed? Or will amano shrimps be able to handle the temperatures?

oh, or maybe apistos? or kribensis? Though I think they'd need a more steady diet because right now I'm feeding my mosquito fish with some flakes or freeze dried blood worms maybe once a week. bigger fish would need a larger diet huh? So maybe that rules out the swordtails? IDK, any advice?

do you have any type of plants in your nano pondsif you wont maby you can split the top edge of the water with some type of glass and have duck weed on one side and the other side would be open them you will have shade, fry protection and food for some of your fish since duck weed multiplys fast.
