as a follow up to the discussion of submersible Ebo (Eheim) Jager heaters sold in north america, my new 150w has no more maximum water line (it now has a minimum water line) and a new cord (that is very thick). it now says 'fully submersible' directly on the unit itself.
this has allowed them to get CSA and UL approval for sale in the USA and Canada without having to put a minimum water line on the heater.
prior to this, they were required by law to put a minium water line on the units if they wanted to obtain the electricalapproval stamp in north america.
for the past few years, this has created mass confusion among aquarists because the literature (box/manual) alway stated they were fully submersible yet there was a maximum water level printed on the heater itself.
which was a contradiction.
they always were the exact same fully submersibles as sold in europe (most people had them submersed anyway) but if they wanted the CSA/UL approval they legally could not claim this.
until now
just thought I would pass this along.
Also, I was talking to my LFS about the problems with the Marineland Stealth heaters lately. they confirmed that in the last 1.5 years or so they have had all kinds of customers with issues with them ('exploding', 'melting' etc)
they used to push them big time, but they don't anymore. they too believe that something happened with the quality control of the heaters, or they changed some material or something.
prior to this, they had no issues with customer complaints with them. very weird.
anyways, just passing the info along.
