Alright guys,

Here's the deal, as some of you know I picked up 6 orino's on Saturday, only 2 of the six have eaten at least one rosy since. Their getting alittle skinnier. All of my water from falcet was filtered through I believe it's called an Ho2 filtration system which makes the water very pure like you would for discus. It cycled for 48 hours, the right amount of bacteria was added, the right amount of electrolytes according to the bottle that comes with it, and the right amount of PH conditioner. I tried San Francisco Bay frozen blood worms about 1/2 hr. ago, no interest. So I checked the PH and Nitrite levels.
PH is at 7.6 dont know why it's so high, bottle directions suck, nitrite levels at .15 ppm water temp at 88. Called the store, owner said he's never heard of having to keep the water that warm for these guys, to drop it back down overnight to around 80, and try live black worms. What about the water?
Here's another thing that is worrying me, before setting up the tank I used the isulated spray that you would use to fill in gaps around the home that cause drafts, that expands for my backround. I also used a spray can bottle called natural rock that walmart sells, the backround looks sharp, like real rock. I let this all dry for more then 72 hrs. before filling the tank, it was completely dry and non-toxic, could this be the problem, and has anyone else ever done this, I've seen it on google for do it yourself backrounds? Thanks for your time, all comments and suggestions welcomed !!!

wuddup bradda.. i drove out there yesterday and picked some up.. thank you btw i been meaning to send you pm...that place is big and they have some awsome stuff.

ok... ph is a bit high for my taste. nitrates are eh... if it was my tank i would do a water change and add some blackwater.. dude trust me keep your water at 87-88 if you dont and since there not eatting they will most likely get ich over time.. these guys are only going to eat live food since they are so small and that they are wild. my guys ate in the bag last night ... i tried feeding them this morning but they didnt eat.. not because they didnt want to but bc they were to slow.... they ate the second time around... im currently feeding them live black worms. these guys were pretty skinny when i got them so they do need to be fattened up a bit.

i dont know about the stuff you used for backgrounds... if others used it and it was ok then maybe its ok, but personally anything in a can should prob go no where near a fish tank bc or the aerosal* i dont know so dont get worried.... to make you feel better.. one time i poured a bit of ph testing solution into my tank water (i thought it was empty ... stupid me didnt look in the tube) anyways i did a water change and everthing was fine.

also what where you saying about cycling? the tank wasnt cycled previously?

I wouldn't have done that kind of background if I were you... But I agree, if it were toxic your fish would be dead.. Keep the temp high and definitely try live blackworms or small guppies.

It sounds to me like your problems are related to poor water conditions. I've set up alot of tanks in the past, but I've never completely cycled a tank in 48hours. You don't state what the ammonia is, but if it is not cycled it would not surprise me if you have high ammonia too. If it hasn't cycled, I'd try controlling the ammonia and nitrites by adding prime and doing very frequent water changes. The temp seems a little high too. Without knowing the size of the tank, if it has in fact actually finished cycling, how big your pbass are and whether the natural rock spray is toxic, this is a difficult problem to diagnose. If I were you, I would proceed assuming the tank has not finished cycling. I'd also call the manufacturer of the natural rock and ask them if it is safe for aquarium applications. Also, if the fish are juvies, try some smaller feeders like guppies or ghost shrimp.

You said that you added bacteria, was it Bio-Spira? You were supposed to add the Fish and the live bacteria at the same time. Without food the BB can die in a couple hours. I would add more Bacteria and toss in a couple dozen treated, small rosy reds. Something that can provide dither effects and buffet style feeding. No need trying to get these guys on prepared food when they seem to be stressed from new tank syndrome.

very good information from everyone.... im speechless... cant give any advise cuz mostly everything is already said.... BUT,, BEST WISHES & and hope all is WELL... GOOD LUCK BRADDAh;)

agreed... you can lower the temp a few degrees when theh get bigger but would leave it high for now

What was the brand and actual name of the paint?? I cannot find it?
