the rock...671!!!
picked up a 3in. ornate birchir couple days ago, he is beautiful!!! i'm having problems finding out what he eats, so far he only takes bloodworms. i've tried krill, chopped up smelt, hikari carni pellets, and small guppies (he can't catch them) anyone have any suggestions? i'd like him to grow pretty fast. i'm thinking about picking up another, we rarely get any type of birchir here so i most likely will. i know they grow to around 1ft, but how fast do they grow? say, compared to a silver aro? right now he's in my grow out tank with a trio of clown loaches.

they can be picky at times especially when they're young. it probably doesn't know yet that the smelt and pellets are food but keep trying. once it gets hungry enough it'll eventually try other foods you put in. try not feeding it bloodworms for a few days and only give it smelt or carni pellets. you can try cut up market shrimps also. ornates actually can grow to about 24 inches. i think the aro will grow faster than the ornate.

24in!!! nice...yeah, i'm gonna keep trying the pellets, my TSN was the same way when it was small.

:iagree: they definitely don't grow as fast as silver aro.

edit: whoops the 'agree' sign is supposed to point to is300zx's post

Took mine a cpl of years to hit 16 inches if that helps.as for food let eat bloodworms till it
gets a bit bigger they are pretty much what a bichir that size would normaly eat in the wild at that size-Anne

Agree!

agree with what anne said, eventually your ornate will eat other foods, if you want to really make it grow fast, place your ornate to another tank so he/she can eat more food

brine shrimp, pellets and bloodworms will make a great diet!!

you could also try earth worms, fozen krill, and frozen squid

I bought a baby ornate last March? I think... andyway, it was about 4 inches at purchase, now is pushing five or six, and super fat! Once thay start eating, they eat anything!
