I got a ornate about a week ago and he was doing fine but has now become a recluse and will rarely come out of his hide and will olny eat talapia i have offered silver sides smelt beef heart blood worms hakari carnivore pellets small guppies meal worms earthworms but he will olny nibble at the talapia. The two senagals i have will gladly eat anything and every thing but the ornate just looks at them

That's what ornates do. Hide all day.
Eat in the middle of the night.

Just stay up to feed it at 2 am.
Or throw ample food in the tank before you go to bed.
It'll all be eaten by the morning.

It wouldn't make sense for a black camouflaged fish to swim around in the middle of broad daylight, ya?

My guess is it'd depend on how your ornate got accustomed to eating before you got him. This is by experience though, as my 6 year old would never be caught eating (but would have a bulging tummy in the morning), but my 2 year old eats along with my other polys. Good luck with the diet variety!

it actually really depends on the individual fish. the ornate i have is actually WC but eats during the day and doesn't hide haha but usually ornates are hiders and inactive

to the OG poster - one way to help would be to keep the tank bare or have no hiding spots. then your bichir will get used to not hiding and once you re-place the hiding spots, there would be a less possibility for them to hide.

also, your ornate eating tilapia is a good thing because thats what bichirs eat in the wild. it will take time to get it to eat hikari pellets but i would recommend you stick with the tilapia, hikari pellets, and try smelt.

all of the other things you are trying to get your bichirs to eat aren't as beneficial as those three i mentioned above.

I have tryed smelt but only the sens ate it but i awoke to him wiyh a large buldge and all the blood worms gone and a neon gone that was in there for food
