Just got a new 3-4 inch red oscar yesterday from the lfs. I brought him home, let the bag sit in the tank for about 15 min, then let him go. As expected he looked around and sat on the bottom for a while adjusting to the temp/ surroundings. My other two oscars didnt bother much, they came over looked bumped then back to swimming around. I decided he was safe for the time being so i went out for a bit, mabey 4 hours. when i returned i did my usual inspection of the tank checked for signs of fighting, knocked over stuff ect. and i noticed my little red oscar was still in the corner by himself almost on his side breathing so slowly he almost looks dead :( but.... I decided i had to take him back to the lfs and so i got my fish bag, poured some tank water in and scooped him up in the net without much resistance. To my surprise as soon as i put him in he became more lively and started acting "normal". As you can imagine i was confused. I forgot about going to the lfs and put the bag back in the tank for about 15 -20 min and then released him again. He looked around a bit then went back to his same spot and didnt move for the rest of the night... strange...

Also i noticed he had some scaled missing when i saw him at the store but i figured it was from fighting, he was in what looked like a 10 gal tank with 10 other oscars... Mabey that has something to do with it? Another thing i just noticed, when he passes through the bubble wand the bubbles seem to stick to him? I dont know if that makes sense? I dont think its ick, my fish have had ick before and it doenst quite look like that it looks more like actual air bubbles. now is at the very top of the tank in a dark corner just sitting still and again, breathing slowly... I dont want to lose him, ive already named himmand everything:(. Please help if you have any idea whats going on.

he's stressed. oscars are well known to sulk and mope along when switched to a new tank. you should have quarantined him before putting him in with your other fish-because if he does have ick (or some other bacterial or parasitic infection) it will be passed to the others..

just make sure you are using aquarium salt, keep your tank temp around 80 degrees, and keep an eye on him.. he may sulk and be a brat for a good week. also, if he doesnt eat for a few days, dont worry too much.

if he continues sitting in one spot, not moving or eating i would take him out and quarantine him-the others may be stressing him too much.. best of luck to the little guy!

nvm, he died :( Luckily the lfs has a 48 hour garuntee so i got a new one and named him Mango II :P This one seems to be doing much better my other oscars are treating him nicely and hes very very active so thats good.

adding fish to a uncycled tank is a bad idea. i usually would nto say a word. But you are killing fish. Please wait until your tank is cycled and then buy all the fish you can handle. If anyone is confused by my post got to the filtration section and see this persons other posts it is pretty sad and this fishs life could have been spared.

The poster here has made a few post in the filtration section about there tank and the consensus is that because they were over stocked and then removed all of there substrate coupled with a habit of changing out the filter media often that the tank does not have enough biological bacteria to support fish. i and several others had tried to warn the person of the dangers of doing all this at once and especially to a uncycled tank. And i came here and seen that even thou they had said they could not get a testing kit yet they were able to get a new fish and the result was death. And that is the only reason i jumped in. It is pure nonsense to take a uncycled tank that is a 56t and already has 2 high waste producing fish and go out and get a 3rd.

my tank was already cycled, if that wasnt true the other fish would have died too and hes fine, eating, swimming normally ect. I bought the fish from a pet store i dont usually go to so i had no idea of the quality of fish, he was already pretty banged up when i bought him but like you said it probably didnt help any putting him under additional stress.

Ive learned from this and Im working harder to keep my tank, water and the fish in perect condition.
