Can't wait to switch to darker substrate and see how its color changes.540186_10151775575964357_1421214975_n.jpgbHi3UKkh.jpg

How can you tell? I googled both and it looks to me like they are pretty identical looking as young. It admittedly looks paler than most pollis but was kept in a bare bottom and my substrate is so light... The seller is a well respected, knowledgeable guy but I am a novice so I didn't study the pics too hard before ordering. Either way I'm happy (neither is a tank buster for my current set up) but I'd like to know for sure!

I am 100% on this. The spotting on most polli only extends from mid body to the tail, then somewhat striped from the mid section towards the head.

A trained eye can see the spotting extends all the way to the head on this bichir. Also, the mouth and eyes have the marbled pattern that retros have and most polli lack.

Polli have a head shape that angles to a point, and is narrower. This retro has the broad blunted head shape typical of a retropinnis.

Thanks for letting me know! I will contact the seller and give him a heads up. Like I said I'm a total novice, and either way is fine for me and my tank. Luckily it appears I've gotten a better deal on this misidentification! The only retros I've seen for sale are twice what I paid.
