I picked up a kkp and a grade A purple parrot. The purple was the best example in the tank, best color, no deformed mouth and really nice finnage. i`ve always wanted to pay for the higher quality parrots instead of settling for the uncolored juveniles you seem to find everywhere.
The kk now that its in my tank and settled in I realize it has very shiney blue fins, almost like what you would expect in a vieja or FH.
Do they use FH to make KKP or is this just a one off fish?

They are both standard parrots. Their contrast is nice and for parrots they are very good. Vieja syn are in the parrot ancestry for sure. I've had quite a few that had nice blue color in the Rays of the fins.

Thanks man, I finally had a good chance to pick up some high quality specimens. I have never seen a picture of a standard parrot with blue in the fins or spangling. If you have any pictures I would love to see it. I had no idea it was even a trait of these fish. I went to a really good store with the intention of picking up parrots I did a lot of reading up on the differences between KKP and the other groups of parrots.

The sticky here on MFK says that there are many different morphs of KK and regular parrots but lists the main differences between the two, so I looked specifically for fish that carried those traits in an attempt to try and select a KKP. He has very large blue eyes, barely notched head, perfectly closing mouth etc. There were several tanks of Grade A orange, Grade A purple and then some low quality regular parrots that held novelty values like white cream colored ones or ones with a lot of black splotches. parrots are my favorite and honestly I could have picked up a whole bunch if I didnt have self control haha.

I picked my orange one from one of the grade A orange tanks that didn`t have overly deformed features, he was without a doubt the best pick in the store form-wise. I`m interested to see how he turns out, I`ve kept a lot of parrots over the years including a big pair of KKP andsome low quality ones with ordinary mouths but longer less rounded bodys. Without a doubt my favorite species, I`ll try and keep an update on them

The yellow one looks male and the red one looks female. I had one very similar to the yellow one but it had red eyes. Keep updating, not enough cool parrots here anymore.

Yeah definitely agree with you there, looks a lot like a male to me too. These two like to stay together I figure because they are both new.

I`m going to assume its a lot like FHs, Vieja heavy strains like Kamfa will have white or blue eyes usually whereas the amphilophus heavy ones like Red Dragons tend to have red eyes.
So with parrots I`m going to assume it goes both ways, not sure I have seen many KKP with red eyes though.

yeah I wish we could get a picture thread of parrots going

Agreed. Both are standard BP's. They're both very nice!

Thanks Manu, can someone please explain how you know they are standard? I researched the differences and looked for one that had king kong features. By all internet ID accounts, it fits KK better than BP. I`m just curious as to how everyone is so sure its just BP?

Regardless hes a beautiful fish and he makes a really nice contrast to the red/purple female.

The fish in question with the big blue eyes has a very different personality, even after just a day he acts a lot more like a texas or midas. very owner resonsive and not even slightly shy. Reminds me of an old vieja I had before he went psycho and killed everyone.

Purple parrot is a lot more shy but coming out more today. no issues in my tank, parrots and geos seem to completely ignore eachother, they make nice opposites subtle sparlkling colors of my grow outs with the raw powerful colors of the parrots. its a nice looking aquarium haha

Most standard BPs have the blue spangling to the fins. It fades as they grow anyway. Nice fish you have. I'm also curious to know what makes a high quality BP and a KKBP different. I would also like to see pictures of a KKBP at a young. Lastly, is there any truth to purple parrots being dyed or hormone treated to get that deep red. My first BPs were labled as purple parrots, they didn't look dyed but as they grew, they became more of the standard orange and did not stay that deep reddish.
