I just got a new payara today around 4-5 inches. Just wondering what you guys would recommend about keeping them healthy. I plan to raise him to a large size. I have heard about them dying around 10 inches. any info to prevent it. And whats the growth rate. In like 6 months, how big will he be? And what would you recommend feeding him. I heard feeders dont have the proper nutrition.?

Thanks

First off, your going to need a large tank, several hundred gallons. They probably grow pretty fast, and for food, I would stick with gut loaded, quarentined feeder, beefheart, shrimp, and most other live/frozen foods.

before we jump to conclusion

we need to know what species of payara it is

some grow to a foot while the big ones grow to 3 :naughty:

I thought it was a Hydrolycus scomberoides

That's what it looks like to me.

As far as what to feed it, I haven't gotten mine to take anything other than live feeders, so if I were you, I'd definately start with those. Not all feeders are bad for it. When they say feeders are unhealthy, they are likely refering to goldfish or any others that are kept in cramped, unhealthy conditions. I've been feeding mine whatever fish are on sale at the lfs. That has included platys, rosy barbs, gold barbs, mollys, and some others.

its a vulpinis or raphondon its the one on the top pic.. i have the same one i grew mine from about 3 inches to 8 inches in about 5 to 6 months but he looks like hes slowing down now.. he should be fine in a 75 gallon for quite some time. at least long enough to see if u can get him past the 10 inch mark.
