Picked this little guy/gal up today. Not sure how to sex them until they are about a year old with white face pearls, but he/she sure is a beauty! And so sweet. Just fully weaned, was hand-fed. Very sweet and loves to sit on your finger thus far... nibbles some still :) Wings are clipped.

I have not had a cockatiel in a long time. Any tips or tricks are welcome, but I have done the basic research :)

Aww very gorgeous! I have a lutino female, which for the first 4 years of her life I thought she was a male... even the vets estimated male because of her bright colors... but then she laid eggs lol
She never did learn to sin or mimic anything though so I would say that if yours starts picking up tunes and whistles easily it's probably a male. If not it could be a female.. .you'll know for sure if it lays hehe

I love yours. It is actually why I thought about getting another one :)

The girl we bought it from said that if it is a male, it will gray up, but if a female, it will keep the pearling. I wonder if this is actually true?

I have never heard that before..... Once they have their full feathering it doesn't change much to my knowledge.
someone told me once that the males feet turn grey and the females don't but I have noticed that has more to do with the color morph than the sex.....
The singing is usually the easiest way to tell...males pick up tunes and whistles and even create their own very easily and usually very young to. females will stick to typical little squeaks and generally refuse to even try and learn anything more lol

i am glad my little pheonix inspired you! They are very underrated little birds and unfortunately most of the ones I have seen in chain pet stores (like the petco I work at) Are parent raised and terrified of people so they do not make good representatives of how nice they can be.

Huh, I guess we will see then :) I really hope its a male, as I want the singing aspect and the showing off and dancing ... it is so cute. I think if we keep calling it a him, maybe that will help :Grinno: HAHA

I hope the coloring stays too. Its beautiful, and the tailfeathers are white with gray speckles which I love.

If he/she has speckles on its tail feathers, on the bottom that is Its a she. males lose them when become adult.

Ok that must have been what she was talking about. Won't know for a while, as it is just a baby :)

Am going to watch interaction with mirrors and music in hopes of a boy :)

I did see it dancing a little earlier when the cat approached the cage curiously. Well, maybe not dancing but it swayed side to side. Quite cute lol. Removed the cat after that, no need to overload the bird on first day home :)

Thats a nervous or anxious thing... my little girl does that when the cat is near or if she is anxious and wanting to come out. she pulls all her feathers in, crest goes up and she runs sideways back and forth on her perch.

whatever you do, do not put her up to the mirror at that young of age it makes them p****d off. You can also whistle it will catch on eventually if its a boy so whistle he/she a song youd like it to sing:) pm me if you need help or have questions!
