There is a larger privately owned fish store about 2-3 hours from where I live, I've been putting off making a special trip there since it's on the way back from a cabin up north. Well this weekend I finally made it up north and on the way back I decided to stop in and see what they had.

It was amazing - they had some salt stuff - mostly corals then the rest was all fresh water. Had about 8 isles of fish, and about 80% of them were cichlids and of that 80% about 60% was new worlds. I was in heaven. They had this GORGEOUS Red Texas that was fading and was just beautiful, but it was too big for the others in my tank.

My tank is just juvies, 2-4.5" and that RT was 7"+ - so not a good fit size wise. In my tank I'm going to try the overstocked route, and then thin where needed as they grow up/out together.

Anyways, I picked up the following - Thorichthys aureum "red", herichthys carpintis escondido and and beautiful 'Cichlasoma' salvin female.

This store is known in the TC area of Minnesota for having an outstanding cichlid offering and now I see why. They even had like 4-5 species of Gymnos which I thought I was going to HAVE to order online to get. Pleco offering was limited (no shocker there) but other then that I'm really excited to go back there and spend some more time looking.

Kinda OT - but does anyone know of a good SA besides a Gold Suam that can hang with CA cichlids?

Hard to find places that focus on new worlds any more everyone pushes Africans here

So it is worth making that special trip.

Few quick pics below - taken with a camera phone and glass is dirty - so not the best quality.

The above female Nic isn't a new addition - just wanted to show off how nicely she is starting to color up :). Had her since she was about 1.5" and really excited it turned out to be a female instead of a male.

Congrats on the new pickups Miss Loon....everything looks great. As far as an SA that can hang, most of the Crenicicha group (pike cichlids) would probably work. Careful though, you might get 'hooked' on them lol.

very nice! congrats

The carpintis is a beauty, and so is the nic.

I'm curious to see if your female salvini colors up in that black substrate, please keep us updated.

I'll look into some dwarf pikes then as my SA/CA community is now just mostly a CA community :)

I'm curious about the female sal too, figured for $7.99 I couldn't pass her up (they were on sale). Also this week I'm going to be getting some new rock work - most rock will be lighter so should have some good contract from the black. Hoping that will be enough to color her up.
