Paid $20 for both of these, the previous owner owned them for 3 years but they came with one of his tanks so I have no idea how old they are. Supposedly one has laid eggs before which is what I was looking for. I hate parrots, but heard they were good for breeding projects. I threw them in my hybrid tank and my rose queen who's usually peaceful would not leave them alone. Anyways.. here they are, ugly parrots..

They aren't too bad looking, they are just stressed in the photos, the one has a crazy eye but it seems to work. What the hell is with their gils? It looks like they have two sets!? Let me know what you guys think.

good size on em. the females do lays eggs alot, you should have no prob gettin the female to breed with something. i got a male/female pair softball size, they mate about every 2 weeks, but of course the male's shootin blanks.

So after taking a beating from my rose queen they are all settled in. I felt bad for them after watching them try to eat pellets. They could barely even compete with my clown loaches lol, their mouths are terrible. It seems to work more like a shovel and if they don't suck the food in they don't get it. The probably only got down 1 out of every 3 pellets they went after. Anyways.. Moved my rose queen into a 20gallon by himself. Now the parrot with the crazy eyes tube is down and its huge. I must have not noticed it before but its even down in the first picture. I wonder if she will mate with anything. I've got 2 flowerhorns, 1 lyonsi, 1 carpinte, 2 synspilums, and a red devil in there, but with my luck she will probably just try to breed with the infertile male (if the other parrot is a male.)

My 3 Blood Parrots are by themseves in a tank for the reason you mentioned, they can't compete well for food. Their genes make them ornery enough to harrass other fish but then they can't defend themselves. I've really grown to like them and I won't ever part with them, good little Cichlid personalities. My favorite one has those odd-colored light green/blue eyes like the one in your picture, pretty cool eyes.

Camph, I think you'll grow to love your parrots. Some of them are downright ugly but I have a gorgeous (IMO) pair that I can't ever part with. Both have fully-working mouths and a pretty tangerine color with blue eyes. The female lays about 200 eggs every 2 weeks, and their personalities are some of the best among my fish.

So whether you're looking to breed, or just have a cool fish, I think they'll both fit the bill.

P.S. You're right about the gills-- they're weird looking!

not sure how I like them yet. Nobody is messing with them though, so thats good. They are like long time best friends, they don't leave each others sides. I think I might breed the female with a red devil to make a more normal looking parrot lol.

BP are kind of like the tramps of the aquarium world, they will breed with anything. Since they are a cross of a devil they have that mentality but they cant really back it up with the deformed mouth however they can still inflict damage. They will scrape their teeth back and forth going to flesh and deeper.

lol thats messed up! Too bad my rose queen hates her, they'd make good babies. Just divided the rose queen and nice female flowerhorn in a 20gallon, they've been fighting through a divider for 20minutes, hopefully they stop and the female drops her tube!
