Cleveland, Oh.
I finally got a better pic of my mystery cichlid. I still haven't found a picture anywhere that shows a M. auratus with this coloring. It definitely has the attitude though.

Picture not too clear. Is she a definite orange colouring? Looks more like a female Melanochromis johannii, as they have an orange colouring. Try and post another pic.

Definitely a Melanochromis, but I don't think its an auratus. Colouring seems wrong for a changing male, and certainly not right for a female.

The colors in the picture are right, it's orange-ish with yellow, black striped fins(the tail is patternless). What really confuses me is that the body stripes seem to be fading out.

If it matters, it is only about 2.5" TL, and it has an egg spot on the anal fin.

On a side note, how does a fish learn to avoid the camera when your three feet away, and don't use the flash?

As stated before I think it is a female johannii. Most definitely not a chipokae. My females have never looked anything like this. Try and post a better pic.

The more pictures of this species I look at, the more I think you're right. Thanks Scotty. A guy at work is interested in trading a Yellow Lab, and another Mbuna that I can't remember the name of at this moment, for "her". Should I go for it?
