Do your fish prefer the dark over brighter lights?

Thanks. Both of mine dont' really care, but if i have to give you an answer I would say dark is better for piranhas.

You know what you can do, move to NJ :)

when you are taking pics, try not to move around the tank that will freak out your fish. just stay at one spot and wait until it comes to you. once it get used to you being at a certain spot it'll just come out to check you out. at least mine did then you just let your camera do the trick. if you'll be using flash then make sure you dont' take it straight on, aim it at an angle so you won't get all the reflection back from the glass.
Good luck and show us some nice pics
