A while back I posted pictures of a particularly dark Synspilum. It's about a year later. The fish is around five inches. While the brownish coloration is gone, it has maintained the darker coloration. I have five juvenile Synspilum in a 180 gallon tank by themselves...this fish among them. I had hoped to have it pair off ith the larger male that I had. It has become apparent that there is some competition for the males affection. The change in coloration is amazing in both fish. While the darker (a female) lightens up a little, the lighter female virtually glows.

As seen a year ago:

Male with darker female. She looks fairly normal in coloration here.

Until you look at the competing female:

Great looking fish. What kind of camera are you using?

That was taken with a Nikon D200 with a 105mm Nikor Macro lens. The lens is new. It has a built in vibration reduction motor that really helps stabilize the camera blur when shooting low light or at a slower shutter speed.

Thanks for the props.

more excellent pics of those synspilum.

are they generally a slower growing fish (5"tl in 1 year)? feels like mine has been stuck at 3" for ages.

Love those Americans!!
