Soo, I have only kept a couple of pikes in my time in this hobby, and a person at my local lfs brought on back cuz it ate his tetras...............

Anywho, i think this little guy is a C. Johanna(?).

But the point here is, I think he has a swimming "issue". He has no problems eating, great colors, and minds his own business. However, he swims perpendicular to the floor a lot of the time. Also, i've caught him sleeping/resting upside down in driftwood more often than not. I've even seen him nap frozen food upside down. Very strange. Entertaining, yes, but very "wtf".

Try to have pics up asap.

Odd. It might be a swimbladder issue. However, Mark has observed his lents pretending to be dead and floating to the surface to nail feeders, so its possible yours is doing the same.

I would assume that its a swim bladder issue. I have been over possible diseases several times and keep coming back to this conclusion. I have already got him on floating pellets and freshwater mysis. His colors are really popping now.

Apologies for the shots, its from my phone.

Looks more like a HER and it looks to be Cr. alta. Congrats! They are GORGEOUS pikes! Very very cool!

Thanks! I had no idea what sp SHE is. Does the shape of the head tell you what sp? Or is it body coloration?

Im a total noob to pikes. Thanks again

The ringed humeral blotch centered on the lateral line, the red 'teardrop' below her eye, and the bar behind her eye are good identifiers for alta. Having said that, there is a slim chance she might be anthurus, but pretty sure she is alta. :)

As to being a female, the white stripe in the dorsal, and the pink belly kinda gave it away. :)

I love learning Crenicicla sp. facts, and this one has tons of personality already.

As for the swimming issue, she seems to be rather used to it. Has no probs whatsoever. Maybe she has always been this way? Who knows, but thanks for the info! I feel enlightened! :)

Oooh, if you ever want to give her up, let me know. i've got a gorgeous male I'd love to find a female for...

Very nice pike! Not sure on the swimming issues, but as long as it has good color and is eating, then maybe just keep an eye on her?

She is beautiful. Looks a lot like mine did when I first got her, except for the spangling. I haven't seen that sort of behavior in mine though, except when she was in with a much more aggressive fish. She would play dead to get him to leave her alone. I ended up trading him for some cories.

Are there any big fish in with her that might be frightening her? If the species guess is right then she isn't going to get nearly as big as most of the pikes you see on here. And definitely nowhere near as big as a joanna.

Yeah that seems to be the census on C. alta. I think she'll max at 9 or 10 in this tank. Assuming I keep her. Im actually going to move her to a quarantine tank.

There is a breeding combo of male carpintis and female salvini holdin the block down. They dont really bother the pike however, they are more interested in a large rivulatis.

Its a wait-in-see at the moment!
