'New' pikes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
These were taking within the last week, they have colored up quite a bit since I first got them. Unfortunately, they have also gotten the dreaded HITH that is so prominent with this species. :( At least they are doing well and eating great! :headbang2

Beautiful shots. Love the pikes!

Peanut---your lent looks AMAZING....but I have to say I think the fire's are best left in the river-haven't seen any tanked examples without HITH

Why do they always seem to get HITH? Do they just not acclimate well to captive conditions/food?

Nice looking pikes btw, even with HITH.

Collection Data for the Rio Atabapo: pH 5.0, GH < 1dH, KH < 1dH, Temp 30-34C ...

Like other fish that are strickly blackwater (altum angels, heckel discus), it may just be a matter of matching the wild parameters. Stickly blackwater fish tend to be more HITH susceptible than fish found in both blackwater and white/clear water (S. daemon, A. heckelii).

Geez, thats gonna be a bit of a challenge to meet. I guess I better start working on the pH drop and hardness drop. Gradual is the key right? This will be a task considering they are in the 300gal.

RO water: Check
500 Almond leaves: Working on it
Peat: Check
Live Foods: Check

We'll see if we can get these babies colored up!!! I'm thinkin this summer I'm going to set up a pond outside and see if RO, low hardness, and sunlight will help out their coloration. I have a hunch it will. :)
