Just started a new pirahna tank. I picked up 4 4-5 inch red belly's at a LFS. After being put into the plastic container for transport the fish began to lie on their sides. The store stated that this behavior is normal when the RBP's are stressed. After putting them in the tank they swam straight to the bottom and laid on their side again. After about 15 minutes three are moving around but the fourth is not. Is this typical stress behavior?

i bought my red bellies from a store that was 2 hours away. They laid on their side in the bag and then were very lethargic as i acclimated them. So yeah, you're probably seeing normal behavior. You're definetely worrying too soon since you said it's only been 15 minutes in the tank.

Even if that ones does die, i'm sure your store will replace it with a clean water sample

I wouldn't worry bout it, its ok if he pouts for a day, he'll be fine in a day or two. Its swimming funny or upside down that you wanna worry about.can't wait to see em.

****, my 8 did that when i moved them in 3 different large containers, i even was so worried that i put in a power head to keep the water running.

Thanks guys. They are doing better now. Still a little shy but they are swimming around now. I turned the temp up a little on the tank too.

It's a 125g tank. How many RPB's do you guys think I put in there. Is it going to be hard introducing more into the tank?

i had 13 in my 135 no problems at all until you dont feed them. make sure to have plenty of feeders! mine were 8-10 inch. oh and when introducing new Ps into the tank make sure you have feeders in the tank. there a schooling fish they care about food more than there tankmates =)

i'm not sure where feeders come into the discussion about adding additional piranhas period. I think what he really meant is make sure they're feed regardless of what it is you feed them (pellets, prepared, live) doesn't matter.

13 in a 135 is too many. he'll lose some probably over territory battles as they grow and take up more space in the tank regardless of how well feed they are. many people can vouch for losing piranhas on days they were feed.

I'd go with 8 for your 125 since you're already starting at 4-5 inches. Some people would consider that slight overstocking but you should be fine if it's overfiltered and you keep up with water changes.

The easiest way to add new piranhas to an existing shoal and many people can vouch for this is to make sure to feed the ones that are already in the tank. Reaquascape the tank to break up the current established territories. Add the new piranhas and then chase all of them (new and old) around with a net to scare the crap out of them. When you're done chasing them, they should be good ol buddies that have forgotten all about intruders being added to the tank.
