Hello Everyone,

My two 4" Red Belly Piranhas came today and just wanted to know anything we should do to help them make the adjustment to the new tank. Anything to look out for, behavior, or actions. The water that they were shipped in is much colder then the water that is in our tank, but our tank water is around 70-80 degrees. They are very calm right now, one of them was floating on his side? I don't know what this means, anyone had anything like this or tips on helping them to get use to everything.

Thanks,

Christos

i just had a couple come in from a shipping yesterday myslef and i had a couple laying on there sides but they eventually came around and started swimming jus give them some time any pics

Did you properly acclimate them? They are pretty tough fish, but a large temp difference could put them into shock. Make sure they have plenty of air, filtration, and clean water (water changes) and they should be alright.

Using a drip system is the best way to acclimate them into their new tank water. you should keep the lights off on their tank for at least two days or so. Don't try feeding for a little while as well.

Thanks guy,

I just came back into the room and they are swimming around but still just relaxing, but they seem to be doing fine. What is the risk of them eating and going after each other? I don't wanna come in tomorrow with just one

It really depends on the personality of the fish. If anything, one will bully the other, and it will be very obvious because his fins will be bitten badly. Put lots of hiding places to prevent one from constantly bullying the other. There is a chance of cannibalism, but if you kept them fed theres a good chance of survival at 4". How big is the tank?

Yeah, I put a lot of fake plants and rocks in there. One is bullying the other, but it seems playful, nothing to big. We currently have a 35-40 gallon tank, I thought it was much bigger until my teacher informed me of the size, hes got some bigger tanks in the back(55G and 100G) that if needed we could set up if you think that the tank now is a big problem.

Thanks,

Christos

They should be fine with bubbles, it will be pretty obvious if they hate it though. As long as the one getting bullied can run away and hide from the bully, they should be fine together. When I kept 2 together I had no real problems.
They should be fine in that tank for now, but they grow pretty quick.
