hey guys i just got 3 new baby pairanhas and im wondering is it safe to feed them a all guppie feeder diet some say yes some say no, need other opinions, lfs says its okay what do you think or should i put em on shrimp and feed them guppies once and a while? Also how do you keep live plants with piranhas if they eat algea eaters? Also not sure which type these fish are i think there Caribe but ill have a pic when i get them into the tank.

edit: sry wrong section

try not to feed them feeders but it's not really as bad as people make it sound. i used to feed my first piranha only on feeders and it grew to 8 inch in about an year. the only disadvantage i saw was how the colors werent very red. now, i feed mine new piranhas nightcrawlers, beef and shrimp which seems to bring out the colors a lot better.

mine dont mess with cichlid sticks( too much flow they move way too fast), but they love algea wafers, romaine lettuce, and mostly shrimp or frozen herring. I also keep about 2 dozen good quality feeders in there and they pick them off one at a time and i reload feeders about every 2 weeks. and i have never been able to keep anything live for plants in there except for java moss

you can use feeders for now since you just got them. Get them a little plump then slowly start changing their diet to frozen peeled shrimp, beef heart (every now and then only), tilapia fillet, or massivore pellets. I find massivore pellets to be the most convenient for me (no defrosting, no peeling). You can do healthy feeders as treat once a month or something. Be patient, it might take you a few weeks to switch them over.

This is how I switched mine:
1. feed them feeder til they're full
2. No feeder for a week, but try feeding them the food mention above during the week. If they are not touched I repeat step 1 and 2 over til they do weekly.

Forgot to mention, if you want to keep plants and dont want the P's kicking the substrate around and uprooting the plants try using those square pond baskets.
