looking to get a new pleco.wanting something colourful,like the look of the royal panaque plecos.any suggestions cheers

Your question is too broad. To each there own. If you like the royal pleco, then start there, they are fairly easy, and tough. Read about the different plecos, and what their husbandry is like. There are many different types, and needs for all the different plecos.

This does not bode well for keeping more difficult species. What is the setup you have tried royal plecos in?

Diet could be the major reason for the royals not surviving. IMO royals are not as easy to keep as people think. They polute their set ups like no tomorrow so they need more maintenance done on their tanks. They also need a diet that consists of wood and vegetables. Feeding them meaty foods with high protein count can cause health issues or death.
