Fabulous fish from Madagascar, can get to 12", and if in a community setting (as stated above) they can get quite aggressive if the tank is under 100 gallons.
I find although moderately aggressive, they are not able to compete with seriously aggressive North or Central Americans like the Herichthys carpintus clade.
The alpha males can be quite aggressive with, and often kill subordinate males and females at maturity in anything under a 6ft tank.
Mine devour any pellet, shell-less invertebrate or insect small enough to swallow. And although they are really not piscavores, will eat any fish they can fit in their cavernous mouth, given the opportunity.

male above female below, although I have seen what I thought was a female, grow a hump and increase in size almost over night, when the alpha was removed from the tank.

the video below is in a 6ft tank

they are great looking cichlids. I have never been able to keep one at more than one at a time. have literally lost hundreds trying to. i go through phases obsessing over these fish. they are very aggressive to their own kind and almost just as aggressive to anything that has a similar body type. they literally kill anything they physically can. I have a 5 incher at the moment. ican only keep im in my tank with polys and dats at the moment. He is unable to compete with my centrals, like duanes said, in my big tank and I can't afford to let him die since he literally has cost me about $100 to $140 to get him to this size in fatalities. trying to bulk him up a bit more to introduce to the big tank but he is pretty enough to be kept solo if need be.
