Hello. My name is Mike Sweet. I live in Valrico, Florida, near Tampa. I have kept fish for a long time, but have had mostly salt water for the past ten years or so. I am thinking about setting up an 18' above ground pool in my yard. I am planning on digging it about 3 feet into the ground to stabilize the temperatures. I have been researching filteration methods on Koi sites. I would like to keep African Cichlids or arowanas from the Amazon in it (both if the arowanas do not eat the African Cichlids). If I cover the pool in the winter with a greenhouse, what temperature do I need to maintain to keep these fish? Is a heater required? Does anyone have a pool like this in my area that I could visit for ideas?
I like to spawn fish if possible (I am not trying to finance the pond by selling baby fish). Can silver arowana be spawned in a pool this size? How high do the sides need to be to keep the arowanas from jumping out? Would arowanas eat African Cichlids?
I just read a couple of long threads about Arapima gigas. I have only seen them a few times in public aquaria. I have seen a lot of other interesting fish in the threads on this site.
