New pond keeper

Hello,

I will be building a pond soon and it just seems too simple. Honestly it seems easy.

I can't do any fancy bottom drains or skimmers, but that's easy enough to do manually. Great excuse to get out of the house to go skim and enjoy the koi. If I set up a waterfall, (setting up a waterfall might be complicated. I'm kind of new to this ok?) and get a pressurized filter set up to feed it, maybe a UV, would I be set to go? Pond will be between 2000 and 3000 gallons and be home to as many koi and mahseer as it can hold. I'll have a shallow area the koi can't reach to have plants for aesthetics and extra filtration.

Also, how would I go about doing water changes on a pond?

I actually use the pond pump to water the garden every day. Then just top it off with the hose. My pond is only 200 gallons so I wind up changing maybe 10% every day or every other. With a pond that big you could probably hook your pump to a garden hose and use it to run a lawn sprinkler so the water isn't just wasted.

I was told, when you're pond is established with its cycle and algae on the walls, 10% a week water change is rule of thumb, and thats a minimum. You could do more if you feel it's necessary.

I suggest you use a UV light as well to keep the water clear. BUT don't use it while the pond is in cycle lol. I made that mistake and t took my pond forever to cycle.

It is easy but after youre finished, youre gonna find things that you wish you would have done another way. Definitely plan ahead

Plenty of people use this as their filter. Basically having the water go through a ton of rocks and plants as it makes its way back to the pond. I personally think a filter would be better considering it looks like youre gonna want a lot of fish.

really depends on how the pond is setup. i simply plug a hose into the output of the filter and run the water into my yard as far away as i can get it.

if youre going with a waterfall, you can simply run the hose from the waterfall to a drain or whatever nearby. you might need another long hose or an extra pump. takes a lot of power to pump water vertically.

I change about 10% of water everyday by using the hose from the pump outlet and sprinkle my garden and refill with my hose. I let the hose water drop down the waterfall to help dissapate any chlorine.
