I have always been into the bigger cichlids but over the last few months I have found my self staring into the the tanks labelled cocktail cichlids, Apistogramma cacatuoides. yesterday i took the plunge and brought a pair of the cheaper colour type to give them a go at breeding. due to an unexpected fry find i had to do a last min tank change and they are currently in my fry tank. should they do ok i may get some of the more expensive colour and breed a few to go in with my angels and BBJ cats.

Nice new project shane , my mate at lfs has got loads of these mini monsters , hes got proper into them as his new phase (he has these a lot lol ) they are amazing little cichlids though some of the breeding colours are stunning , apparently there pretty aggressive too for there size :D
Hope you get some luck with them mate

well they only been in the fry tank for a day, and the female which is about 3cm TL has been getting her fill of dovii fry which are about 2cm TL so she got something about her lol. im already sold on a couple more pairs of different types i think.

quick update, it looks like the female is in breeding colours which is cool hopefully see some fry in the coming weeks.

I love apistogramma. Breeding setups can be REALLY simple, A little sand for them to sift, a small terra cotta pot with the draingage hole enlarged so the female can just fit, and a piece of structure in the corner for the male to hide is all that is needed. Once the females are guarding fry, they will try to drive the male away, so the male needs a place to get out of sight. I like to add oak leaves to my setups as well.

Your success with different types depends on your water parameters. Soft water greatly increases your chances for healthy fry/eggs. Grab an API GH and KH test to get an idea on your parameters.

thanks for the heads up the set up is pretty basic with a massive (compared to the tank) ornament that made of caves etc a few pots and another ornament with a hole only the female can get in, also put a bit of mixed gravel in the bottom fine to course.

found bristle nose fry in this tank this morning. a bit unexpected but a welcomed find lol

whistle looking at the fry (1cm) bristle nose (still not sure how i missed them until now) I notice my female cockatoo acting a bit wired so got a torch out to check in the knocks and grannies and found a very small number of fry, not free swimming so only a day out the egg i think but they are wriggling. its like a babie bloom in one tank lol.

well made a few adjustment to the tank and took some pictures of the new additions. thought I would share.

triple red male

I been doing a bit of research and from what I can gather this fish do better in mixed groups as long as they the same Sp. so I put the two pairs in together once they had paired off and all seems well. I made change to my flow but adding a baffle ( conduit and some sponge) and they seem a bit happier now.
