new Rainbow cichlid

I've never seen them for sale in my LFSes till now, so I figured I'd pick a little 1" specimen up for 3 bucks. Tossed him in my 200g; he's by far the smallest fish in the tank, fortunately noone's attempted to eat him yet :D

This specie has a temperament similar to convicts, right? Any reliable way to sex them?
 
I find them to be a good bit calmer than convicts. However they have a very nice pattern and color.

Are you sure the salvini wont try to eat him?
 
definitely not the salvini, or any of the other americans. Ever since they matured, they never have been much of piscivores. That's not to say they won't go after easy-size fish like zebra danios and guppies, although even then they all seem to prefer pellets if given the option. Lazy slobs.

I never was too concerned about him getting eaten, but if it happened it would definitely be done by either a 6" female M. crabro, 6" female N. fuscotaeniatus, or to a lesser extent my 6" female D. comprecisseps. Those 3, along with the smaller african haps/tangs in the tank, are PREDATORS.

if ppl knew how terrible the fish lineup is in el paso, you'd understand. I never saw even saw managuense or flowerhorns in a lfs till a month ago and 8 months ago, respectively. This was the first time I ever saw rainbows, and they were only 3 bucks and they stay small, so I nabbed one.

Dang that is pretty bad.

So I am guessing they dont have motaguense or any of the other guapotes there either?
 
I am with you my LFS are horrible when it comes to new world cichlids. They only carry managuense,uros, midas hybrids,cheap flowerhorns,convicts,texas cichlids and jack dempseys. They also have green terrors,peacock bass and oscars. Thats pretty much it. They get dovii every now and then and to my amazement they got loiselli in. Of course they didnt not know they were loiselli they thought they were managuense. They dont know anything about american cichlids either one of the workers thought a marbled convict was an oscar.

Good thing I order/import most of my cichlids..

P45 you should start a topic about how bad the selections is ...It would be interesting to see how it is in other parts of the US.
