Mikrogeophagus maculicauda

These have been in the hobby for a while, known as Mikrogeophagus sp. Zweifleck or “two spot.” They’re differentiated from M. altispinosus by the large black spot on their caudal peduncle.

Now we have brazilian ram lol


M. altispinosus are also found in Brazil, in addition to Bolivia.

Ah I see, good to know. I figured the maculicauda bit would be something of importance morphologically (if that makes sense), and that the only picture I've seen wasn't doing the species justice. I'd heard of them before, but only that there was a possibly distinct ram floating around. Judging by the placeholder name I'd assume they're more prominent in the European hobby.
 
They’ve been available here a few times. I got wild ones from a Mato Grosso import by Jeff at Aquatic Clarity. Here are some better photos of the sub-adults showing the large black blotch on the caudal peduncle. Honestly, this is the only real difference in appearance from altispinosus, IMO.
