Hi, I just got my pair of synspillus that I ordered from Jeff Rapps, they are about 3" and already have some beautiful colors on them, I have never kept these before, and was wondering haw fast do they grow, how agressive are they, and can they be kept long term with the Carpintas Escondido's that I also got from Rapps in a 6 foot tank. any info is greatly appreciated, I now have my dream fish and hope that they can live peacefully together.

Synspilums can grow .5-1" per month. I have kept mine with escondidos before with no real problems, but it's far from peaceful with them (as with most cichlids). Synspilums swim a lot and are very active. Mine weren't overly aggressive. My experience with Synspilums seem to be that they will tolerate smaller less aggressive fish, but there will always be a showdown/beating with trouble makers. Also, they usually tolerate each other until they are mature (6" plus).

Thanks, I was mostly worried about the Syns getting beat up by the carpintas, from what I could find on the internet the majority of sources say that syns are peacefull and only agressive to each other when large.

most likely will be fine but i'd definitely keep an eye on them. sounds like it'll be a really nice setup. gonna put in any dithers?

i just got a pair of Synspilla a month ago, keep them in my mixed 135gal tank with carpintis and some large Africans till they grow larger and go to South American tank.
At 5" he quickly won a hiding tube for him self only letting a smaller female in from time to time, dont see that much aggression as it is a crowded tank. Quickly they are becomming my favorite fish.
Hey guys, where did u get ur ESCONDIDOS, been looking ofr a while here in Toronto area, not much luck. Will have to have them shipped. Any directions would be appreciated.

Syns are great fish, probably my favorite. I have 2 good sized males right now. In my experience, they are not overly aggressive, as long as the tank is all males. If you add a female of ANY cichlid species, there will be major problems. One of my Syns previously paired up with a big female carpinte, and nearly killed the other male Syn. Once I removed the female carpinte, back to peace. Keep it an all male tank with lots of cover, and you will likely be okay. Mix sexes and you will most likely have problems. Carpinte can get along fine with syns, assuming you add them together at a young age and grow them together. Adding an adult of any sex that has been isolated, and you will also lilkely have trouble. Is your tank a 180 or 210? Good luck.
