I'm setting up a new tank for my rays - 8' x 3' x 2'h. I'm thinking of using 2 FX5's for filtration. Is that sufficient filtration or should i go with another alterantive? Any suggestions / recommendations. Will be keeping 3 or 4 rays in the tank and a few severums.

Thats not enough.
I have a 6 x 3 x 2 with tigers and 2 rays , and i have 2 large eheims and 2 fx5's.

Im thinking of adding one more also.
With 4 rays, and so much water, you will need more filtration. or just do a massive sump and an external for back up.

Agreed, you need to ignore the manufacturers claims of "for tanks up to" as they are overly generous and probably refer to a tank with 30 neons in. You will need a sump on that side of tank but the fx5s will be good complimentary filters in addition to the sump.

Thanks for the input. I've decided to go with a 100 gallon sump - that is what the tank builder recommended. That will give me an extra 100 gallons to offset the amount of waste produced by the rays. It's more pricey but there's something to be said about doing it right the first time!

Screw buyin all those canisters. It's a waste of money and I wouldn't want to maintain 4-5 canisters. That would be a pain. Find an old 125 and do a sump. Every couple days change the filter socks. Look st some of jcardona DIY sumps.

Your tank is a little bigger than mine (300gal) but i run 2 FX5's and a wet/dry and it works like a champ for me.. I also added a bed filter for more bio being rays are huge poop machines..lol

I just ordered the tank yesterday. It will be a few weeks but I'll post pics once set up. here are the rays that are going into my new tank.
