I am in the process of having a new tank built and I am just curious how you figure out how many gallons a tank is. My new tank will be 96x36x18 and I am just not sure how many gallons this will be. I Need to know for weight and bracing of the floor. There will be a 75 gal wet/dry, and a steel stand so this puppy is gonna be heavy. Any help here would be great. Where would you drill holes or have cutouts in the top for filters/tubing and such? Tank thankfully will be acrylic:)

figure a little less when you calculate the thickness of acrylic.... also 75 sump won't be 100% filled so... the easiest way to brace it is first stick it on load bearing wall.... then measure out the front of the tank attach 2x6 or 2x12 I prefer the 2x6 and use screw jacks on the front corners.... that more than enough extra support.....also 24" tall is much better for rays....

I think 24 tall is barely enough. My tank is 10' by 30" by 30" and my rays are going to out grow it pretty soon. I regret not going wider. Is there any chance you can go 30" tall. I've never seen a ray that didn't love climbing the walls. Good luck and can't wait to see your new tank.:headbang2

To calculate the number of gallons in a tank, multiply height X width X length in inches, and divide by 231 which is the number of cubic inches in a gallon... simple.

I have had large rays in 18" tall tanks and they are currently in 24" tall tanks. They are fine in both. Go for 24" if you can....the extra water volume will make maintaining water quality easier, however if you need to cut weight, 18" will be fine. the 96 x 36 base is good.
