Ok so my husband and I finally got some Red Festaes. We picked up a male and female from our LFS. They are about 4 inches but are not a pair. They are currently in a 40 gallon breeder with a few random 2 inch African fry. This is our quarantine tank They have showed no aggression towards each other or the other cichlids. As a matter of fact the first moment the male saw the female he started doing his little mating dance for her lol. How long before we will have to start worrying about aggression? The tank is set up with plenty of caves and hiding spots. In a week they will be moved to a 55 gallon that will be set up to resemble their natural habitat. Here are some pics of the female she is very people friendly the male stays well hidden.

Congrats on your pick up. How sure are you on them being male and female? There's never a time table on when aggression will start. Just keep an eye on them and have a divider ready. Keeping dithers in there will help immensely also once they spawn leave dithers in until fry hatch, then you can pull dithers. Good luck:)

Well the guy that owns and runs the fish store breeds them and he divided the shipment up with males in one tank and females in another. I hope that he got them right they were not cheap at this size. When we brought them home one of them was darker with a dark greenish hint than the one in the pics which is bright green and yellow. Could I and the fish store have them backwards and the out going attention hog is the male??? If the other one would come out long enough I could snap a pic of it.

It's very possible that you have a pair. If you do it looks like male on bottom and female on top. That black substrate won't do them a lot of justice as far as color goes. But good luck. Best way is to vent them until they show obvious color. Or just watch their behavior towards each other:)

They seem to take to each other right away. They are sitting in a cave side by side right now. Also the tank they will be going into on a permanent basis has sand in it. I sure hope we got two that paired up that easily lol our buddy that runs the fish store went through 7 males before he got one the female did not kill.
