I went to my lfs to pick up a fesate, i ended up leaving with one but not really what i was expecting. The kid working told me i can have it because how badly it was beat and continuously being beat by 3 10 inch pacu's some other smaller fish and a 8 inch RTM, all in a 40 gall :x So me being me couldn't say no so i took it in thinking i can bring this fish back to life basically. My questions are, I've never really had a fish in this bad of shape so i am unsure of what to exactly to treat for and with. I have noticed the fish has problems staying upright so it lays on its side for the most part, but can flip back and swim for a minute then back to the side, i have him eating already, thankfully. But what is the problem and how can i heal this lil guy?
Sry for rambling, just trying to get some info from fellow MFK's on this subject.
Thanks

Never a good sign when a fish lays on its side like that. I hope you didn't pay for the fish. I've never been able to save a fish that lays on its side when its been beat badly. Just do water changes, maybe add some salt. I don't like to medicate a tank with a fish that is near death because the meds could just kill it

Im sorry but imo you should put that one down. even if you do save it, it looks severely deformed!!! at least you didnt pay for it and i realize the need some people feel the need to try and save fish but sometimes saving a fish means putting it out of its misery. I bought a male from florida earlier this year that looked fine in pics but when it arrived it had a hard time swimming just like yours and looked to have a major problem with its pectoral area making him swim in circles, also it looked like his head was too big for his body LOL almost short bodied. I had to put him down, it was a tough thing to do especially at 6":( but is was necassary to do.

I had a JD in way worse of shape, warm water, salt, an WCs go along way. Also feed it good pellets.

I would give it a chance. Do small wc daily raise the temp to 80-86° and add salt. since its eating already it has a fighting chance. If it doesn't start improving by wensday or so put it out of its misery.

I've saved fish in the past that have started floating after being beaten (not quite as bad as this though) and always found that frequent water changes and plenty of extra aeration helps them to recover. Hope he pulls through!
