I came across one of these little (not for long) guys at my LFS today and couldn't pass him up. I currently have a 90 gal. stocked with juvenile CA/SA cichlids which I am upgrading to a much larger tank in the next couple of months. I'm keeping an eye out for a deal on something in the 400-500 gal. range (let me know if you know of any, lol!).

Anyway, I figured this little dude would fit right in to that mix. He is about 2 in. and the cichlids about 3.5. I have a couple of other bottom dwellers in there and they stay in the rocks and wood mostly and the cichlids don't bother them. Not this guy. When I put him in the tank he decided to swim around the edges of the tank on top, looking for a way out I guess. He was doing a perfect impression of a topwater lure and the cichlids responded as you would expect. Apparently, this catfish had no concept of hiding. Inside of 15 minutes he had been hit by three or four of them, had torn fins, and was on his way out for good. I removed him and put him in a spare 20 long I had for now.

I keep my cichlid tank at the 79-80 degree mark...should I do the same for this guy in the 20 long? I suppose what I will do in the near future is move him to the new larger tank first and let him pick out some hiding spots and get established for about a week before moving the others. Should that work? Should I expect him to fit in and be ok or are these fish normally whipping posts for cichlids until they are big enough to eat them?

Damn...I put a couple of Feather Fin cats in there a few weeks ago and they fit in from the start. I really thought this guy would do the same. Any ideas or tricks for keeping these guys?

well, the RTC will grow faster then all your current fish that you have and will eat them. a 20gal would work out good for a month...keep the temp at 80 to 86 a good filter would be needed....if all else fail...build a tank for that little guy.
you can check out my threads about RTC...growth, feedings, and there current home. hope that all your questions were answered.

Cool....thanks. I've got a spare 55 to move him to when he outgrows the 20 long, and by the time he outgrows that I should have the big tank ready to go.

I'll keep an eye on his growth. I don't want him eating my other fish. I figured with the jump start they had they would be able to stay large enough to not be eaten until they are full grown. I don't know...can a RTC eat a full grown Trimac or Umbee? If so, then I am in over my head, lol.

full grown Trimac or Umbee....if it fit's in a RTC mouth...then it'll eat them. my RTC (12'') ate a 7'' servum.

Damn...so you really can't keep these things with much of anything then, from what it sounds like...at least not if you expect to keep your other fish.

you can keep all types of fish with a RTC....i have 2xRTC (18'') with a 10'' red devil.....as long as you have enough room for the cat and the other fish....you'll be good.

OK...well I am going to give it a shot. I'll just keep them separate until I have the big tank in place, then add him first. I'll keep an eye on his size compared to theirs and switch up if stuff starts to go missing. I've always wanted one of these so I'll keep my fingers crossed that it works out.

good luck bro....keep us posted.

Becareful with the Umbee-they get really aggressive my is currently in my pond til I can find him a good home-he has killed just about everything I have put him with.

RTC's pretty much do better in ponds, or species only tanks..
