What is an acceptable level of nitrate for a saltwater reef tank? I currently do not have a protein skimmer. My tank is 36 gallons with approximately 20lbs of liverock. My current nitrate level is between 5 and 10ppm. Should I invest in a protein skimmer and which one?

we have a marines section that you will probably get more of a response there. With reef tanks you want almost no nitrates like 5 or less. Also depends on the corals. Some can tolerate more or less. Like mushrooms and zoas are pretty easy to keep. Your goin to get mixed opinions on the skimmer subject. Ive seen awesome reef tanks that would blow your mind that have never had a skimmer and then theres people that swear by them. Personally i have one and if you could see the gunk that it pulls out, it might persuade you to get one.
