Hey so i've always had swim only tanks. sharks eels rays etc. I want to convert my 340 gallon into a reef (130Lx24Hx24W) and i need lighting help. On my swim tanks i use LED's. What amount of LED's should i use or would yall deffinetely go MH's for a reef? and if so what wattage (400w?), how high should i hang them above the water, and how far apart/many? Thanks for the help guys.

It will depend a lot on what types of corals you plan to keep. I would make a list of corals you really like and want to have and then plan your lighting around their requirements.

3-4 400w (MH) on a tank like that I should think would let you do anything you wanted to.

But...post what you want to keep and we can come up with the best lighting plan for you personally.

If its 24" deep I'd suggest 250's. Never done led's. Usually 1 MH for every 2 ft. of length kept at leat 6" from surface.

I think this guy has moved his thread to the General Salt area because this one still isnt getting as much traffic as I would like to see.

Sorry guys traveled out of town. I plan to do scolymias, and other colorful lps's such as brain coral, bubble coral, plate coral, candy cane coral, and anything else that is colorful and fits well with their needs. I've got 4 power heads from the two rear overflow boxes which I think should be enough water movement. Wavemakers would be too much flow. I was thinking 4 24" 200w metal halides spaced 9 inches apart. If y'all think anything else is better feel free to say I'd aprpreciate it.

LPS love being fed meaty foods. Try chalices, they are quite beautiful & colorful. Mine are all very happy & growing under T5s.

Chalices are cool, they can do low light, low flow, but most require feeding.

I have a hollywood stunner that is growing and putting out more eyes without feeding right now.

They can be adjusted to higher light levels, but it takes some time.

Highly atinic displays are also usually regarded as better for bringing out their true colors as well.

When did corals have mounts?!?...As you can see I'm a noob...and don't keep corals. I always thought they relied mainly on photosynthesis of filter feeding meals.
