first of all YES I DID BUY A TURTLE WITHOUT FULL RESEARCH! with that said, he is in a 75g, 12" of water at 81f, zoo-med floating turtle dock(yeah i know i need to figure out a better option but i got it for fathers day), some driftwood, ac110 filter, 48" reptisun 5.0 flourescent over glass tops, fully cycled tank and will be on a drip system once i redo my overflow.

what i need to know is am i ok so far? the lfs said i dont need a basking lamp but now im seeing i do. what kind do i need, and can i still use my glass tops with it?

thanks and any other pointers is well appreciated.

I believe glass tops are supposed to block the UVB, so you'd need to ditch the tops anyway. Also UVB rays cannot really penetrate water so you only really need it over the basking area. What size is your RES? Temp might be a little high...

Water Temperature: ~ 72 to 76 degrees for sub-adults & adults, 78 to 80 degrees for hatchlings & smaller juveniles.

about a 6" shell.

so i will get rid of the glass under the light, and reduce water temp, but i will also need a basking light to provide heat for the air correct? and what kind of light do i need to buy? also do i run the basking light 24 hours?

sorry for the Q's but i want to get all this taken care of quickly and properly.

thanks guys, tommorow i'll run out and get the basking light and get everything straightened out.

sucks that the place i bought him had the light over glass(i fixed that here at home), who knows how long he's been neglected. he eas like a champ though!

got a 400g sitting in the garage im going to be setting up soon for him and add some others as well.

Man, I coulda gave you an RES!

Post pics of that 400G set-up when you get it all put together.
sounds awesome.

will do. the 400 has lead a hard life and dont really trust it full of water, but 18" of water or so in it is fine. should be starting soon and will post my progress.

Wouldn't call it neglect, I know of quite a few experienced turtle keepers who've raised their turtles to adulthood without any UVB at all, just a good diet. That said, it doesn't hurt to provide it.

Here's a couple of posts I made over on TurtleTimes about sliders a few years back:
Housing the Red Eared Slider
A Diet Summary for Sliders

Good luck,
Paul
